One of my favorite movies is Der Himmel über Berlin, in English, Wings of Desire. The story involves the secret lives of angels (biblical speaking). One falls in love with a human trapeze artist, the rest is the rest. He chooses mortality over immortality to be with her. Pay attention – this is as romantic as I get.
In one scene she is listening to music, specifically “The Carney” by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (who performs “From Her to Eternity” in the actual film [!!amazing!!]). Someone dubbed Radiohead over a few scenes – normally stuff like this annoys me but I have to say they did it goddamn well. Judge for yourself:
And then Zucchero with John Lee Hooker, holy shit:
If that doesn’t get you going, nothing will.
Then, after all the warm and fuzzies are over and the angel remembers that he’s God’s hitman, play O’Malleys Bar (for the understandable destructive aftermath).
